MDisputes provides pro bono guidance to ministries of justice and other public institutions on improving access to civil justice.
This can often be achieved through effective promotion of mediation and other ADR mechanisms that facilitate the rapid and low-cost settlement of disputes.
Achievements
In December 2022, Michael Mcilwrath and Chiara Tondini participated in conferences and meetings in Tbilisi, Georgia at the invitation of USAID (United States Agency for International Development) for the “Rule of Law Program 2021-2026” . Georgia introduced the country’s first mediation law in 2019, and the events in Tbilisi were aimed at fostering greater use of mediation within the legal and business community. In coordination with the program’s organizer, Sophie Tkemaladze, Mike and Chiara spoke from their experiences within a large business (Mike) and a Chamber of commerce (Chiara) in promoting greater adoption of the practice, which included:
- raising awareness of the benefits of mediation with businesses and clients;
- advising clients in mediation, with practical examples of successful outcomes in international commercial disputes achieved through mediation;
- proposing actions and strategies to promote a broader mediation culture, sharing by way of examples the experience of other civil law countries, such as Italy.
